My favorite band in San Francisco around 2001-03 was NUMBERS, by a mile. Such a blast. Here’s a video of them that just surfaced to my attention, from March 2002. Watch the kids go bananas.

Magisterial panic rock from San Francisco, 2001. NUMBERS’ wild 20-minute album “Numbers Life” from which this comes is a guaranteed yearly play for me.
It’s been a few weeks – how about another DYNAMITE HEMORRHAGE RADIO PODCAST, what do you say? This is the nineteenth edition (#19), and this time around I’ve got some stunning new stuff from RUBY PINS, THE AR-KAICS, SIMPLE CIRCUIT, SKINNY GIRL DIET and CONSTANT MONGREL. It’s about an hour, all told. The older material includes a lot of daffy, developmentally-delayed rocknroll this time around, including messed-up sideways punk from The Silver, The Panics, Art Phag, The Keggs and The Riptoids. Then there’s stuff from Black Flag, SPK, The Bristols, Winterbrief, and Kitchen and the Plastic Spoons, too – so maybe that’s more your thing.
Parents may find it somewhat challenging trying to explain this music to children, so please share this with the utmost in caution. There are 18 other episodes to download as well – you’ll find those all below the playlist.

Got a new mixtape/radio show/podcast that I’ve made just for you, and it’s called DYNAMITE HEMORRHAGE RADIO PODCAST, EDITION #12. I recorded it direct-to-laptop and completed it within the past five minutes, and it’s got some real musical whoppers on it that I carefully curated for ya. You’ll hear new stuff from Raw Prawn, White Fence,The Mentalettes and Veronica Falls, as well as a plethora of aggressive pop, nervous punk, wiry garage and far-out psych from the last five decades. I say this every time, but this twelfth one is absolutely, positively the best collection of music I’ve ever put together – including mixtapes made for girls.

NUMBERS, live in San Francisco, April 2003, doing “I’m Shy”. For about one year this was the hottest band going, and I was fortunate enough to have been in attendance at this show and a handful of others before it.

In 2002, San Francisco band NUMBERS were my favorite musical act on the planet. I got to see them play multiple times as their hyper, Bulb Records-inspired, technology-gone-awry dance/postpunk was becoming fully formed. It was pretty ephemeral, too, because after about a year, they’d pretty much played the whole concept out and started releasing some pretty mediocre records.
I’ve listened to “Numbers Life”, however, at least once every six months since it came out that year. Not much of a commitment, considering it’s over and done in 20 minutes, but absolutely one of my favorites of the first decade of our young century.
