Derek Bostrom, who drummed and (as I’ve learned) originally sang for The Meat Puppets, uploaded a host of early 1980s demos of the band, some made even before they started getting proper gigs.

Not only will you hear feral early versions of “H-Elenore”, “Unpleasant”, “Blue Green God” and “In A Car”, they do a host of wild and surprising (and contemporary) covers that range from Vom’s “Punkmobile” to The Flesh Eaters’ “Sleeping Sickness” to Wire’s “Outdoor Miner”.

Check it all out here.

How about we post last week’s podcast again, in case you haven’t streamed or downloaded it yet…?

You can pretty much set your watch by the arrival of a new DYNAMITE HEMORRHAGE RADIO podcast, every two or three weeks or so, give or take a few days on either end. Our newest edition is our fortieth (four-zero; #40) and was recorded on the 4th of July in a place where said day is utterly meaningless and uncelebrated. I’ve been enjoying larding these shows up with new stuff rather than mp3s from my outrageously bountiful mp3 collection (you should see it!), primarily because every two weeks I keep hearing new stuff I think is totally rad. Case in point: THE COOLIES, PIECE WAR, THE YAKKS, DARK TIMES, MEN OH PAUSE, POW!, WOLF GIRL and COLD BEAT – all brand new. All great – or else we wouldn’t play it, right?

There’s also the new reissue of The Flesh Eaters“A Minute To Pray, A Second To Die” to contend with, as well as important material that its essential you listen to from Tales of Terror, The Milky Ways, Naked Spots Dance and others. It’s one hour and a few minutes, and it’s available for download on iTunes and Soundcloud and in other spots as well – like right here.

Polaroids of the MEAT PUPPETS, live in Phoenix 1980. This is when they were playing hardcore punk in such a wacked-out, wild fashion that it came across as pure mockery, and very often was. I heard them on the Maximum RocknRoll Radio show not long after this and thought it was the greatest band name I’d ever heard to date.

I promptly told my friends in middle school that I was “listenin’ to the Meat Puppets these days”, though the truth was I couldn’t handle them until at least 4 few years later.

To close out September in fine style, I’ve strung together 21 quality rocknroll compositions, grouped them into logical clusters, added some pithy and often insightful commentary, and called it DYNAMITE HEMORRHAGE RADIO, Edition #21. It’s the bi-weekly podcast I do. I hope you download it, or maybe stream it if you’d like. New stuff this time from Neonates, Los Tentakills, Ruby Pins, The Ar-Kaics and even the queen of swinging mademoiselle French pop herself, Clothilde.

Old(er) stuff this time leans loud, but not exclusively: Myelin Sheaths; Tyvek; early Meat Puppets; The Only Ones at their most “punk”; Terminal Waste Band even the disco/dub/krautrock band Tussle. I made it for you, so at least you should try a couple minutes, right? Oh – and this hideous Avant Gardener sleeve was deliberately chosen as the “art” for this episode. You can’t look away.

At one point (1980-81) THE MEAT PUPPETS were so experimental and deranged that they fit best on bills with arty synth bands and weird hardcore punk/goth bands who spit fake blood on stage. I’d have enjoyed this night of Los Angeles debauchery very much had I not been such a young’un at the time.

One of the coolest and more equanimous things I’ve ever seen done in music history was the time the LA synth/artpunk band MONITOR decided to give one track on their own album to their Arizona pals THE MEAT PUPPETS.

The result, sitting there near the end of Side 2 of the 1981 “Monitor” LP, is this track, “Hair” by the Meat Puppets. It sounds like nothing else on the record; and indeed, like nothing else in the universe. Play loud, preferably at work.

Just received one of those newfangled cassette-transfer contraptions in the mail recently, one of those things that lets you take ancient cassette tape recordings and transfer them into new, improved digital versions. Even figured out how to use it. Just in the nick of time, too – I mean, I have a garage full of 1980s mix tapes, live show recordings, and radio shows I once did in college moldering and decaying. Another year or two and they’d be sawdust. This post is the first of several rescue/reclamation projects.

On June 14th, 1989, a 21-year-old version of me did his final “White Trash” radio show on KCSB-FM in Santa Barbara, CA, as he graduated from college that very week. It was taped, and after festering in aforementioned garage for 24 years, was transferred this evening and uploaded for what interested parties there might be to then download and listen to. Having listened to the tape for the first time in at least 20 years before digitizing it tonight, it naturally brings forth much embarrassment – so please humor me and let me add a few careful disclaimers in case you wanna listen to it (and you should – the music is smokin’).

After doing a radio show at KCSB for four years, and having had access to all the records in their library (and being a rabid music hound/record collector of the most obsessive order), I got to be fairly knowledgeable in the limited punk rock/heavy underground rock genres I’d permitted myself to like. My dismissive, albeit very studied, insecure cockiness is on display in this show. I’m not sure I’d actually like this DJ right now as a human being if I was hearing him on the radio for the first time. Though I love every song I played in this, “My Top 40 favorite songs of all time” show, I can’t believe how dudely it all is. For the 1989 version of me, it was all dudes, all punk, all raw and all aggressive. The only chicks allowed were those rare cool ones from The Bags, The Avengers and Sonic Youth. That’s it. The Fall sucked already, and The Lazy Cowgirls were the best live band in the world.

It’s also preposterous that someone with such a limited musical life experience and frame of reference could even deign to determine a 40-greatest-songs-of-all-time list. As you might expect, approximately 37 of mine came from the 1980s. One of the highlights/lowlights of this show is the recording that starts the show, a nervous, mealy-mouthed 16-year-old me doing a “guest DJ” slot on KFJC (on the “Ransome Youth Show”) in 1983. Then the 21-year-old me mocks him mercilessly, with all the wisdom and experience that 5 years of perspective and deep life experience brings.

Now that I’m doing a fake radio show podcast here in 2012/2013 – Dynamite Hemorrhage Radio  – I was startled to see some identical on-air back-announce mannerisms crop up from ‘89 that mirror the blather I’m doing today. Hopefully you’ll enjoy forty dudely 70s/80s songs from the likes of The Pagans, Mudhoney, Black Flag, Scratch Acid, Die Kruezen, Electric Eels and more. I have even worse shows sitting in the garage ready to be rescued and maybe even posted at a later date.
